Christmas Craft: Snow Globes and Decorations

We put up our Christmas decorations slightly early this year, mostly due to scheduling issues. Things have been a bit up in the air what with my new job and not knowing my rota for this month until it was happening.

The kids were pretty excited to find all the decorations, especially the snowman army.

They take a lot of pleasure in little things which is lovely to see.

Note Roslyn hugging the snowman like Sandy used to. That very snowman was the one Sandy toted around between 18 and 21 months old, calling it his “babee” and looking after it. He shortly after replaced that babee with his real one, and she will probably be known as babee when she enters school!

We made some snow globes using old jars, christmas figures and some white glitter. I didn’t think it through though and set them up to make them only to realise once we glued the figures on we could do nothing else until the glue dried!

We tried passing the time with some DSLR selfies (hard to do) but they weren’t having it.

So I cracked open the craft tub my brother got me for my birthday last year and we made some decorations (the one thing our tree does NOT need more of!!)

IMG_5533

Sandy made his all by himself and I think it is utterly adorable!

IMG_5536

Roslyn did a penguin and apart from the coloured in nose and hat it was all her… even the eyes! So impressed!

IMG_5539

She put it on the tree and seemed pretty content with it.

Sandy put on mine and his.

We still had a little time to kill so Sandy dressed up as his idol, Ezra Furman, in a dress with pearls.

Then we filled the jars with water, glitter and a drop of glycerin (to stop the snow falling too quickly) and glued the lids into place.

Sandy loved his and I think they turned out really special!

Autumn Craft

Despite our busy October we have managed to fit in a good deal of Autumnal crafting. Sandy has finally come around to the idea that drawing, painting and creating is fun so it’s lovely to be able to make things with him. We’ve been doing some themed projects based on the time of year.

With dark skies come stars and with stars come space rockets! As you can see, Sandy has all of a sudden been able to draw specfic things, and copy, rather than just making marks. I was so impressed when he copied the space ship Pa had drawn on the chalk board!

We decided to make some Halloween cards to give to family and Sandy wanted to give one to Mrs Devlin, his nursery teacher (or Devlin, as he simply calls her!). The kids painted in autumnal colours then we let the pictures dried and cut them up into shapes including pumpkins before glueing them to cards.

Halloween fun continued with my obsessive purchasing of gourds. Sandy and Roslyn had great fun examining all the different sizes, shapes and colours, as well as carting them around the house. Sandy and I partook in putting them on our heads and shouting “PUMPKIN HEAD!”

As Halloween drew close we got two MASSIVE pumpkins and carved them. I gave the kids pens and they drew on what they wanted me to carve.

The result was fabulous! Roslyn had her very own design and Sandy managed to draw a scary face!

They were both very proud of their spooky creations…

…and they looked fabulous lit too!

Once Halloween was over we continued our crafty ways and made fireworks pictures for Guy Fawkes night. We took black paper and drew chalk trails, glued on scrunched up tissue paper and sprinkled on glitter.

I had decided to make an art wall for the kids to put up their work so these were the first to go in it and I think they turned out brilliantly.

Here’s hoping the next few months bring lots of other, fun Christmassy crafts too!

Easy Easter Craft

At hobbycraft the other week I spontaneously put two polystyrene eggs into my basket thinking vaguely of easter crafts. Then I got a job and it all went mental and a few days before easter I saw the eggs sitting undecorated and realised if they were to be done seasonally and ready for sunday it was now or never!

IMG_8574

So we grabbed up some tissue paper, a pritt stick, ribbon and stickers and crafted it up.

IMG_8577

And for once in his life Sandy actually enjoyed something arty! There’s hope for him yet 😉

IMG_8579

I’m not going to say that Roslyn was extatic but she did enjoy trying to get her hands on the beads to eat them. Luckily she’s not had the alphabet in her nappies so I think we managed to keep her from them well enough.

IMG_8581

Sandy was happy to stick the chick stickers onto both his and Roslyn’s egg.

IMG_8583

And I think the end result is pretty good considering it was rushed in before 8am!

IMG_8589

Sandy was even able to tell me that his says “Sssss! For Sssssandy!” and that Roslyn’s was “Sssss… for Babee!”. Almost!

Happy Easter!
